Mid-January, mid-outage, somewhere in the North Country: a portable generator is running in a garage “just until the storm passes,” or feeding a house through a homemade cord with two male ends. This is the week every winter when portable generators hurt people — and it’s never the machine’s fault. It’s the connection.
We’re going to be blunter in this article than we usually are, because the stakes justify it. If you own a portable generator — and around here, most rural households do — please read the first section even if you skip everything else.
Never backfeed your house. Ever. Here’s why.
There’s a piece of equipment that exists in far too many North Country garages: a cord with a male plug on both ends, used to feed a generator into a dryer or range outlet. The trade calls it a suicide cord, and the name is earned twice over.
First: with the right sequence of mistakes — and outages at 2 a.m. are made of mistake sequences — that cord has a live male plug exposed in someone’s hand.
Second, and worse: plugging a generator into a house outlet backfeeds your electrical panel, and unless the main breaker is off (and stays off, and nobody flips it), it backfeeds the utility lines outside your house — through the transformer, which steps your generator’s 240 volts up to thousands. The line crew working three poles down to restore your neighborhood has no reason to expect a dead line to be live. Line workers have been killed by exactly this. Not hypothetically — it’s a known, documented cause of lineworker deaths, and it’s why utilities and code treat backfeeding as the cardinal sin of home wiring.
It also, almost as an afterthought, can destroy your generator the instant grid power returns, voids your homeowner’s insurance in the event of a fire, and violates code in every jurisdiction there is.
If a male-to-male cord exists in your garage, cut it in half today. We’ll wait.
The right way costs less than people think
Here’s the good news that surprises most callers: doing this correctly is one of the most affordable projects in residential electrical work.
Two pieces of hardware:
A generator inlet — a weatherproof male receptacle mounted on the outside of your house, wired to your panel. Your generator connects to it with one heavy, proper cord. No open flames of improvisation anywhere in the chain.
An interlock kit — a simple mechanical slide plate on your panel that makes it physically impossible for the generator breaker and the main breaker to be on at the same time. Not a rule you have to remember at 2 a.m. — a piece of metal that remembers it for you. Your generator can never meet the grid, and the grid can never meet your generator.
Installed, inspected, and legal, the inlet-and-interlock package costs a small fraction of a standby generator system. When the storm hits: roll the generator out, plug in one cord, flip the interlock, and choose your circuits. A 7,000-watt portable will carry a surprising amount of house — furnace or boiler, well pump, refrigeration, lights, internet — if the panel side was done right. We size and install these packages constantly, and it’s some of the most satisfaction-per-dollar work we do.
What about just running extension cords?
Cords through the window to the fridge and a lamp — done with heavy-gauge, outdoor-rated cords, fully uncoiled — is safe. It’s also deeply limited, because cords can’t reach the things that matter most in a January outage: the furnace, the boiler circulator, the well pump, anything hardwired. Which, in winter, is the whole point of having backup power.
Think of extension cords as the camping-trip version and the inlet as the homeowner version. One keeps the milk cold; the other keeps the pipes from freezing.
Carbon monoxide: the rules that are not negotiable
Every winter, carbon monoxide kills more generator users than electricity does. It’s odorless, it’s fast, and the scenarios repeat with terrible consistency. So, the absolute rules:
- Outside. Only outside. Never in the garage — not with the door open, not “just for a few minutes.” Never in the basement. Never on the enclosed porch. The exhaust from a portable generator can incapacitate people in an attached garage’s worth of air shockingly fast.
- Twenty feet from the house, exhaust pointed away from every door, window, and vent. Distance is the entire safety mechanism; give it real distance.
- Watch the snow. This is the North Country footnote the national safety sheets miss: a running generator melts a pocket in the snowbank, drifts build around it, and suddenly the exhaust is being redirected somewhere you didn’t plan. Keep it shoveled clear, all night if it runs all night.
- Working CO detectors inside, before you ever need them. Hardwired and interconnected is the standard we install — every alarm sounds when one does — but any working detector beats none by an infinite margin.
Winter care, so it starts when it matters
A portable generator that’s been asleep in the shed since March is a coin flip. Ten minutes a month makes it a certainty:
- Fresh fuel, stabilized. Stale gasoline is the number-one reason portables don’t start. Run it dry or stabilize it in fall; keep this winter’s fuel actually from this winter.
- A monthly test run under load — not just idling, but powering something. Ten minutes.
- Cold-weather oil, per the manual, because −10° starts are hard on engines running summer-weight oil.
- Know your cord and your sequence before the outage, not during. The 2 a.m. version of you will be grateful for the daylight rehearsal.
When it’s time to graduate to standby
The portable-plus-inlet setup has one requirement money can’t remove: you, home, awake, willing to go outside in the sleet. For plenty of households that’s fine. But if you’re deploying the portable several times a winter, or you travel, or you’re protecting a camp that sits empty — that’s the line where an automatic standby system starts earning its price. It starts itself, transfers itself, exercises itself weekly, and pairs with monitoring so you know it all happened.
