Ice dams wreck more North Country ceilings than any other single cause. Properly installed roof and gutter heat cable — on dedicated circuits, with controls that run it only when conditions demand — is the difference between managing winter and paying for it.
Heat cable that works is heat cable installed right
The big-box zigzag stapled to shingles in November fails for predictable reasons: undersized circuits, no ground-fault protection, cable routed where ice doesn’t form, and constant operation that burns the cable out in two seasons. We design layouts from how your roof actually ices, run dedicated GFCI-protected circuits, and add sensor controls that energize only when temperature and moisture call for it.
Beyond the roofline
Self-regulating pipe trace for the well line and the crawlspace run that always freezes. Heated mats or embedded systems for steps and walks that never see sun. Gutter and downspout cable that keeps the melt moving. Each on its own circuit, each controlled, each ready before the first storm — the install season is fall, not February.
The design visit: reading your roof
Every roof ices in its own pattern, and the pattern is the design brief. On the assessment visit we read yours: which eaves dam (north faces and shaded valleys lead), where the vents and dormers concentrate melt, how the gutters and downspouts route water, and where the existing electrical can feed the system. Photos from a bad ice year are gold — bring them.
The design that comes back is specific: self-regulating cable routed to your actual trouble spots, dedicated GFCI-protected circuits sized for the load, sensor controls that run the system only during ice-making conditions, and a switch position you can check without a ladder.
Beyond the roof: the whole freeze-protection portfolio
Roof cable is the headliner, but the freeze-protection catalog runs deeper, and most properties need at least one more line from it: self-regulating trace on well lines and vulnerable plumbing (the single cheapest insurance a seasonal camp can buy), heated mats for the entrance that never thaws, gutter and downspout cable that keeps the melt moving all the way down, and monitored circuits so a tripped freeze-protection breaker in January sends a text instead of a plumbing bill in April.
We install all of it in the fall window — and retrofit sanity into the DIY systems we inherit, which usually means proper circuits, self-regulating cable, and controls added to a layout that had the right instincts and the wrong hardware.
