Does Solar Make Sense in Lake Placid? An Honest Look

June in the Adirondacks: the sun is up before five, down after nine, and every homeowner watching it pour across the yard starts doing the same mental math. All that light — shouldn’t it be paying for something?

It’s also the season the solar sales circuit comes through, armed with statewide-average production numbers that have never met a North Country January. So here’s the version of the solar conversation you’d get across our counter — from licensed electricians who install these systems, have watched them perform through real winters, and don’t have a sales quota shaping the answer.

The short version: solar genuinely works here, for the right house, sized honestly. The long version is why those qualifiers matter.

Do solar panels actually work in a cold climate?

Better than most people guess — and the reason is a happy accident of physics: photovoltaic panels are more efficient cold than hot. Heat is the enemy of PV output; a crisp, bright 20° day is excellent generating weather. Combine that with our long summer days, and annual production for a well-sited Adirondack array lands surprisingly close to downstate numbers. Germany — cloudier and farther north than we are — built one of the world’s great solar industries. The sun is not the problem.

So when someone tells you “solar doesn’t work up there,” they’re wrong. But when a brochure shows you a smooth monthly production curve, they’re also not telling the truth. Which brings us to the real issue.

The honest part: our seasonality is extreme

Here’s what your array will actually do: feast in summer, fast in winter. A Lake Placid rooftop system might produce four to six times more in July than in December — short days, low sun angles, and snow cover stacking on top of each other. The system that runs your whole house in August will cover a fraction of your usage in January.

The bridge across that gap is net metering: your summer surplus flows to the grid and becomes credit; your winter consumption draws it back down. Annual solar economics in this region live or die on that mechanism — which means they live or die on your utility’s specific terms.

And here’s the local wrinkle that flatland solar articles never mention: this region is a patchwork. Lake Placid and Tupper Lake run municipal electric departments; Plattsburgh has its own; NYSEG and National Grid cover the territory between. Their rates and net-metering arrangements are not identical, and the differences move solar payback math more than panel brand ever will. It’s the first thing we check when someone asks whether solar pencils at their address — because “does solar make sense in Lake Placid?” and “does solar make sense in Wilmington?” can have different answers for reasons that have nothing to do with sunshine.

What about snow on the panels?

Less of a problem than it looks, more of a design input than people treat it as.

Panels are slick glass, usually warmer than the air when the sun hits them; on a decently pitched roof, snow slides off within a few days of a storm — often in one dramatic whump you’ll learn to anticipate. Steep camp roofs shed beautifully. Low-pitch roofs hold snow longer, and we model that production loss honestly instead of waving at it.

The genuinely underrated option here is the ground mount. On larger rural lots — of which this region has a few — a ground-mounted array lets us set the ideal tilt for our latitude, shed snow aggressively, skip the roof-condition question entirely, and clear panels with a roof rake after a big dump if you’re feeling ambitious. Some of the best-performing systems we’ve built stand in side yards, not on shingles.

One more design truth with extra weight up here: shading analysis is not optional. A white pine or a ridge line that eats your mid-afternoon sun changes the annual math meaningfully. Any quote that didn’t involve modeling your roof, your trees, and your horizon is a brochure with your name typed on it.

What incentives are available for solar in New York?

The stack, without the sales gloss: the federal investment tax credit plus NYSERDA’s NY-Sun program still meaningfully buy down system cost, with net metering carrying the ongoing value. Both have stepped down over time and will keep evolving — which is exactly why we quote against what’s active at signing for your address, and put it in writing, rather than reciting numbers a script remembered from two program-years ago.

The electrician-specific footnote most solar quotes skip: your service has to be ready to interconnect. Older panels and undersized services sometimes need an upgrade before the utility will approve the connection — and discovering that mid-project is the expensive way to learn it. We check first, because we’re the trade that has to fix it either way.

Who should install solar — and who shouldn’t

Good candidates: year-round homes with decent southern exposure and a sound roof; higher-usage households — heat pumps, EVs, electric everything — where every generated kilowatt-hour offsets real money; owners planning to stay past the payback horizon; and camps wanting battery-backed independence, because solar-plus-storage has quietly become the best off-grid and outage-resilient camp setup we install — clean, silent, and no generator droning across the lake.

Honest no’s — and we say them regularly: heavily shaded lots (the trees win; we won’t pretend otherwise). Roofs within a few years of replacement — re-roof first, always. And anyone whose primary goal is outage backup: panels alone shut down during an outage without storage, so if resilience is the point, a battery or generator does more for less, and solar can join later.

The math, for your actual roof

Everything above is the general case. What you actually need is the specific one: your roof, your trees, your utility, your usage history, modeled month by month — including the December truth — with a payback number you can hold us to.
