Why Your Heat Pump Project Needs an Electrician Before an HVAC Installer

January is heat pump season in the North Country — not for installing them, but for deciding on them. The fuel bill lands, it’s ugly, the neighbor won’t stop talking about their mini-splits, and NYS is waving incentives at the whole idea. So the research begins.

Here’s the thing the equipment brochures and most of the sales quotes underplay, and it’s the entire reason this article exists: every heat pump project is an electrical project first. The refrigerant lines get the attention; the wiring determines whether the project goes smoothly, goes over budget, or stalls in your driveway with equipment on the truck.

We wire these systems alongside the region’s HVAC contractors constantly. This is what the electrical side actually involves, and the one cheap step that protects the whole project.

What are the electrical requirements for a heat pump?

The core package, per outdoor unit:

A dedicated circuit sized to the spec plate — commonly anywhere from 15 to 50 amps depending on the unit’s capacity. Not estimated, not “what the last one took”: the manufacturer publishes exact minimum circuit ampacity and maximum breaker size for every model, and the install is wired to those numbers. Multi-zone systems and air handlers add their own circuits on top.

An outdoor disconnect within sight of the unit — code-required, weatherproof, and (here’s the North Country footnote that flatland install guides always miss) mounted above real snow depth. A disconnect buried behind February’s snowbank fails its one job precisely when the service tech needs it. We’ve mounted a lot of these; we know where the snow goes.

Condensate and controls coordination — low-voltage control wiring, and in some installs, heated condensate management, because a drain line that freezes solid in January is a service call with our region’s name on it.

None of this is exotic work. But all of it has to exist — permitted, inspected, done — before the refrigerant side can finish. Which raises the question that actually decides these projects.

Can my electrical panel handle a heat pump?

This is the question, and here’s the expensive surprise we exist to prevent:

A whole-home heat pump conversion can add 40 to 70 amps of connected load to a house. Now stack the rest of the electrification wave the same households are riding — the EV charger, the induction range, maybe a hot tub — and look at the panel doing the carrying. A great many North Country homes still run 100-amp services, and plenty of those are already working near their ceiling every winter evening. (Flickering lights when big loads start is the classic tell.)

The worst-case sequence — and we’ve been called into it more than once — goes like this: equipment ordered, HVAC crew scheduled, install day arrives, and then someone opens the panel and finds there’s no room at the inn. Now a service upgrade is suddenly on the critical path, the HVAC schedule slips, and a project that should have been sequenced calmly is being done under pressure at pressure prices.

The prevention costs almost nothing: a load calculation, first, before anyone orders equipment. We run the math against your actual service and your actual plans. Three possible answers, all good to have in January:

  1. It fits. Most single-zone and many two-zone installs on healthy 200-amp services sail through. We rough in the circuits, the HVAC install proceeds on schedule, everyone’s home by dinner.
  2. It fits with load management. Smart load-control hardware can sequence the big loads — pausing the car charger while the heat pump works hard, say — and keep you legitimately inside an existing service for far less than an upgrade costs.
  3. The panel has to grow. And knowing that in January transforms it from a crisis into a plan: bundle the upgrade with the heat pump install, coordinate one schedule, open the walls once, and come out the other side with a house wired for the next few decades instead of patched for the next three years.

Sequencing with the NYS incentives

The NYS Clean Heat incentives flow through the participating HVAC contractor — but the electrical scope is typically quoted and performed separately, and coordinating the two is where owners quietly save real money.

The sequence we run with the HVAC companies we work alongside: load calc and electrical quote up front, so the full project cost is known before commitment. Circuits, disconnects, and any panel work roughed in before equipment day. Final connections bundled into the commissioning visit. One permit story, one inspection rhythm, no crew standing in a driveway billing hours while they wait on a different trade.

If your HVAC quote doesn’t mention the electrical scope at all — and some don’t, listing it as “by others” in the fine print — that’s not a red flag about the HVAC contractor. It is your cue to get the electrical answer before signing, because “by others” means you, and you deserve to know the number.
