Is Whole-House Surge Protection Worth It?

Here’s a service call we run a few times every year, always with the same opening line: “It’s the weirdest thing — the furnace board, the garage door opener, and the TV all died the same summer.”

It’s not weird, and it’s not coincidence. It’s surges — and not the cinematic lightning-bolt kind. It’s the hundreds of small voltage spikes a year that age electronics quietly, the way road salt ages rocker panels, until one August the accumulated damage cashes out all at once.

Whole-house surge protection is the cheap insurance most North Country homes still don’t have, and September — storm season’s tail, with a winter of grid drama ahead — is a fine month to fix that. Here’s the honest case, including the parts the sales pitch skips.

Where do power surges actually come from?

Lightning gets the headlines, and a nearby strike is certainly the heavyweight event. But the overwhelming majority of surges are mundane, and most originate closer than you’d think:

The grid doing grid things. Utility switching operations, capacitor banks kicking in, a transformer re-energizing after an outage — every one sends a voltage wavefront down the line. And here’s our regional specialty: the blink. That flicker-and-restore that punctuates every Adirondack windstorm? Each restore is a surge event arriving at your panel. If your lights blink a dozen times a year — and out on the rural runs toward Vermontville or Black Brook, they blink more than that — your electronics are absorbing a dozen hits annually, minimum.

Your own house. Big motors — well pump, compressor, the table saw — generate small spikes on your own circuits every time they cycle. Death by a thousand cuts, self-inflicted.

Long rural lines amplify all of it. Homes at the end of long utility runs — which describes half our service area — see wider voltage swings and harder-arriving transients than the village house two poles from the substation. The customers who need surge protection most are precisely the ones the national articles, written from suburbia, never picture.

What’s actually at risk in a modern house?

The old argument against surge protection was that a house didn’t contain much worth protecting — motors and light bulbs shrug off spikes. That era is thoroughly over.

Walk your house counting circuit boards: the furnace or boiler control. The heat pump. The induction range, the washer, the dryer. The well pump controller. The EV charger. The standby generator’s brain. The solar inverter. Every one is a computer now, and every one is hardwired — meaning no plug-in strip can ever stand between it and the panel.

A single furnace control board replacement, parts and labor, frequently costs more than the entire whole-house surge protection install. After a good surge event, boards have a habit of failing in bunches. That’s the arithmetic, and it’s not close.

How does whole-house surge protection work?

A Type 2 surge protective device (SPD) mounts at your main electrical panel and clamps voltage spikes at the point of entry — shunting the excess safely to ground before it reaches your circuits. One device, every circuit protected, including all the hardwired equipment nothing else can reach.

The install is quick work for a licensed electrician, and it pairs beautifully with any panel work — if we’re already in there for an upgrade or repair, adding the SPD is some of the cheapest protection money buys anywhere in the trade.

And your plug-in strips at the TV and desk? Keep them — they’re the second layer. The strategy the industry actually recommends is layered protection: the panel SPD absorbs the heavy hits, the point-of-use strips polish off what remains for sensitive electronics. A strip working alone, eating full-strength surges, is a sacrificial part on an unknown schedule. A strip working downstream of a panel SPD lives a long, easy life.

What whole-house surge protection won’t do

The honesty section, because trust is the product:

A direct lightning strike to your house is not a survivable event for electronics, SPD or no SPD — that’s what homeowner’s insurance is for. What surge protection dramatically improves is survival of everything short of that: the nearby strikes, the grid events, the blinks, the motor spikes. Which is to say, nearly everything that actually happens in a given decade.

SPDs are consumable. Every hit absorbed spends some of the device’s capacity, and after enough of them it wears out — quality units have indicator lights that report their status honestly. We check them on any panel visit, and replacing a spent SPD that died protecting your equipment is the system working exactly as designed. Think brake pads, not brake failure.

Who should move first on this?

If we’re triaging the region, the priority list writes itself:

  • Anyone at the end of a long line or in blink country. You already know if this is you.
  • Anyone with a generator, heat pump, solar inverter, or EV charger — four-figure electronics, all hardwired, all unreachable by any power strip.
  • Camp owners. A surge-killed sump controller or heat-tape controller in February does its damage silently, in an empty building, until spring makes the introduction.
  • Anyone already scheduling panel work. The marginal cost while the cover’s off is as low as it will ever be. Just say yes.

One device, one visit, everything downstream protected — that’s the whole pitch, and it’s a rare one in this business where the honest version fits in a sentence.
