Heat Tape vs. Heated Roof Edges: Stopping Ice Dams for Good

There’s a specific sound North Country homeowners learn to dread, and it isn’t the plow scraping by at 5 a.m. It’s the drip. The one inside the house, in February, coming from a ceiling that was fine last week — because forty feet up, an ice dam has been quietly backing meltwater under the shingles for a month.

Ice dams wreck more ceilings, insulation, and wall cavities in this region than any other single cause we see. And October — right now, while you can still stand on a ladder without wearing crampons — is the month to deal with it.

Let’s walk through how ice dams actually work, why the heat cable you bought at the hardware store failed after two winters, and what a properly built de-icing system looks like.

How does an ice dam actually form?

The physics is almost elegant, in an infuriating way.

Heat escapes your house through the roof — every house, no matter how well insulated. That heat melts the underside of the snowpack. The meltwater runs down the roof until it crosses the eave — the overhang, which sits outside the heated envelope of the house and is therefore cold. There, it refreezes.

Do that for a few weeks and you’ve built a ridge of ice at the roof edge — the dam. Now every new trickle of meltwater hits the dam, stops, and pools. Water that pools on a roof goes the only direction it can: up, under the shingles, which were designed to shed running water, not resist standing water. From there it’s into the roof deck, the insulation, the wall cavity, and eventually your ceiling paint, which bellies out like a water balloon.

The icicles everyone photographs are just the visible symptom. The damage is happening behind the ice you can’t see.

Does roof heat cable actually work?

Yes — when it’s understood correctly and installed correctly, which are two different failure points.

Here’s the thing heat cable does not do: melt the snow off your roof. No cable could, and none needs to. What a properly designed system does is narrower and smarter — it keeps drainage paths open. Cable along the eaves, up the valleys, and through the gutters and downspouts maintains open channels so meltwater exits the roof instead of pooling behind an ice ridge. The dam never forms, because the water never stops moving.

Should you also improve attic insulation and ventilation? Absolutely — that attacks the root cause, and we’ll always say so. But plenty of Adirondack roofs can’t be fully fixed from the attic side: cathedral ceilings with no attic at all, camp additions with three different rooflines, dormers and valleys that create natural ice traps. For those roofs — which is a lot of roofs around Lake Placid and Saranac Lake — engineered heat cable is the tool that actually works.

Why did my hardware-store heat cable stop working?

We replace a lot of failed DIY heat cable, and it fails the same four ways every time. If you recognize your roof in this list, you’re not alone:

It was constant-wattage cable, left on all season. The cheap stuff runs at full output whenever it’s plugged in, whether it’s −20° or 45° and raining. Run it from November to April and it cooks itself — two or three winters is a typical lifespan. Self-regulating cable, the professional standard, adjusts its output to temperature along every inch of its length and lasts several times longer.

It had no dedicated circuit. Cable stapled up in November and plugged into the porch outlet is sharing a circuit that was never sized for a season-long heating load. It trips all winter, someone resets it, eventually nobody notices it tripped in January — and now you have an unprotected roof and a false sense of security.

It had no ground-fault protection. Roof cable lives its entire life in meltwater. Code requires GFCI protection on these circuits for exactly that reason, and the hardware-store install almost never has it.

It was laid out from the package photo, not from your roof. The zigzag pattern on the box assumes a simple rectangular roof. Your actual ice forms on the north eave, in the shaded valley, and below the bathroom vent stack — and if the cable isn’t where the ice is, it’s decoration.

A professional heat tape installation is the inversion of all four: self-regulating cable, laid out from how your specific roof ices, on its own GFCI-protected circuit, with controls. Which brings us to the part that changes the economics entirely.

What does heat cable cost to run?

This is the question that stops most people, and the horror stories are real — for uncontrolled systems. Constant-wattage cable running twenty-four hours a day from Thanksgiving to Easter shows up on the utility bill, no question.

A controlled system is a different animal. A sensor controller monitors temperature and moisture and energizes the cable only during the specific conditions that make ice — snow on the roof, temperatures in the melt-freeze band. In a typical Adirondack winter that’s a fraction of the season’s hours, and the operating cost drops accordingly. The cable also lasts far longer, because it isn’t running itself to death on the mild days.

Frame it against the alternative: one ice-dam insurance claim — ceiling, insulation, repainting, the deductible, the premium bump — buys a lot of Februaries of controlled heat cable operation. This is one of those purchases where the math stops being close once you’ve had the drip happen to you.

Don’t forget the ground level

The same freeze-thaw cycle that dams your roof also ices the north-side walkway that never sees sun, and freezes the water line in the crawlspace of every seasonal camp in the county. The full de-icing toolkit covers all of it:

  • Self-regulating pipe trace for well lines and vulnerable plumbing runs — for camps left cold all winter, this plus a power monitor is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy
  • Heated mats or embedded systems for steps and entrances — solving both the 6 a.m. shoveling and the slip-and-fall liability
  • Gutter and downspout cable that keeps the melt moving all the way to the ground, because a downspout plugged with ice defeats the whole system

Each on its own circuit, each controlled, each installed before the freeze rather than during it.

When should heat cable be installed?

Fall. Full stop. Roof work happens before the snow flies, the electrical gets inspected, and the controls get tested by first freeze. Every year we get calls in January from homeowners standing under a three-foot ice dam, and the honest answer at that point is roof-raking and steaming — remediation, not prevention. The prevention window is now.
