There’s a specific kind of July evening this region does better than anywhere: dinner stretching past sunset on the deck, the long blue dusk that hangs around until ten, the walk down to the water in the last of the light. Landscape lighting, done well, extends all of it — the path stays walkable, the good trees keep their shape, the place feels finished after dark.
Done the way the coastal catalogs suggest, it’s dead by April.
We know because we replace it — the season-one casualties, the half-dark path lights, the transformer buzzing under a dead system. The gap between landscape lighting that lasts and landscape lighting that doesn’t has almost nothing to do with the fixtures’ style and everything to do with a design input the catalogs have never met: winter. Our winter. Here’s how to build for it, and how to design light this landscape actually deserves.
Why does landscape lighting fail so fast here?
The post-mortem list is remarkably consistent. If your system died young, you’ll recognize its cause of death here:
The plow got it. Fixtures placed by summer logic — along the driveway edge, at the walkway corners — sit precisely where the plow berm and the roof-shed snow go. Delicate aluminum path lights versus a winter’s worth of thrown snow is not a fair fight, and it’s refought every storm.
The frost got the wire. Kit instructions say to tuck the cable an inch under the mulch. Then our frost line — measured in feet, not inches — heaves the ground, and heaving ground stretches and severs shallow wire like it’s floss. Half the “mystery dead zones” we diagnose are exactly this.
Water got the connections. Those pierce-and-clip connectors that come in the box? They corrode the moment moisture finds them, and in this climate moisture always finds them. Corroded connections are, no exaggeration, about 80% of the “half my lights are out” calls we run.
The transformer had no headroom. Sized to the exact original fixture count, so the first addition — the new tree, the extended path — demands a replacement instead of a connection.
None of these are lighting failures. They’re winter failures. Which means they’re all preventable at install time.
How we build it to last
The professional difference is unglamorous, underground, and permanent:
- Real burial. Low-voltage runs in conduit at proper depth where trenching allows, routed around the known plow and shovel zones — we ask where the snow goes before a single trench is cut, and in this region that question does more for system lifespan than any fixture choice.
- Genuinely waterproof connections — gel-filled or heat-shrink splices at every junction, the kind that treat water as inevitable rather than unlikely.
- Fixtures placed for February, chosen for decades. Path lights sited where the snowbank isn’t; wall-mounted and tree-mounted downlights doing the work in plow territory (snow can’t knock down what it can’t reach); solid brass and composite fixtures that shrug off ice and skip the corrosion cycle entirely.
- Transformer headroom baked in, so next summer’s ideas are an afternoon’s work, not a rebuild.
- Line-voltage circuits where they’re earned — long runs and big installations sometimes justify proper GFCI-protected exterior circuits, buried to code, and we’ll tell you honestly when that’s the right architecture.
Designing it: light the property, not the sky
Now the fun half. The Adirondacks still have real darkness — you can see the Milky Way from most of our service area, and that’s genuinely part of what these properties are worth. Good landscape lighting design protects it, and happens to look far more expensive doing so.
The principles we design by: warm color temperature — 2700K, always, outdoors; cool-white landscape lighting makes a pine forest look like a car lot. Shielded fixtures aimed down, putting light on the stone, the bark, the path surface — never glare-bombing from the fixture itself. And layers, used sparingly: soft moonlighting filtering down from high in a good tree, honest task light at steps and doors, an accent or two on the features that have earned it — the birch clump, the stone wall, the ledge. Then stop. The single most common design flaw we correct is too much light; the property should glow, not perform.
On the water, restraint doubles as neighborliness and, in places, regulation: dock and shoreline lighting should read from across the lake as a warm suggestion, not a runway — which is also, not coincidentally, exactly what looks best from your own Adirondack chairs.
The controls finish it: astronomic timers that track our wildly swinging sunsets automatically (dusk moves more than two hours between June and December here), and smart control when you want scenes — the “dinner on the deck” setting, the away-mode that makes an empty camp look tended.
Why July is exactly the right month
Three reasons this article carries a mid-July date. The install season and the enjoyment season are the same short season — a system installed now pays out immediately, every evening, all the way to the snow. A design walk in July sees the property in full leaf, which is what we’re actually lighting — a layout drawn in November lies to you. And the trenching happens in soft, dry ground instead of October mud, which your lawn appreciates as much as we do.
The process starts with our favorite appointment of the year: the dusk walk. We wander the property with you as the light fails, and decide together what deserves to stay visible after dark. Most residential systems install in a day or two after that.
Book the walk — bring the beverage of your choice, that’s allowed — and by August the place will do that July-evening thing every single night, on schedule, for years.
