Every October, on more or less the same weekend the woodstove gets its first fire, space heaters come down from North Country closets by the thousand. And every winter, heating equipment sits at or near the top of the national home-fire cause list — with portable heaters carrying far more than their share.
Here’s the part of that statistic the safety pamphlets undersell: the heater itself is rarely the villain. Modern units have tip-over switches, overheat protection, the works. What fails is almost always the thing the heater plugs into — the circuit, the outlet, the extension cord. The house side. Our side.
So this is a house-side article: why your breaker trips, which warning signs mean stop, and how to heat that one cold room permanently instead of gambling on it every winter.
Why does my space heater keep tripping the breaker?
Because of arithmetic that almost nobody does before plugging in.
A typical space heater on high draws 1,500 watts — about 12.5 amps. A standard bedroom circuit in an older home is 15 amps. Read those two numbers again: one heater on high consumes most of an entire circuit by itself.
Now, the crucial part about the housing stock around Saranac Lake, Au Sable Forks, and every village in between: older homes routinely run a whole bedroom — or two bedrooms, or three rooms — on one 15-amp circuit, because that was generous when the house was wired and nobody owned anything electric but lamps. Add today’s heater to the TV, the lamps, and the phone chargers already there, and the breaker trips. Not because anything is broken — because the math doesn’t fit.
Here’s the reframe that matters: that tripping breaker is a success. It’s the protection working. The house that should worry you is the one in the next section — where the numbers are just as bad and nothing trips at all.
The warning signs that mean stop today
A breaker trip is the system talking. These four signs are the system shouting:
A warm outlet or plug. Put your hand on the receptacle where the heater plugs in. Warmth there means electrical resistance — a worn outlet whose contacts no longer grip, or a loose termination behind it, slowly cooking under hours of sustained load. This is the actual mechanism behind a large share of heater-related fires, and here’s the frightening part: it can happen at current levels that never trip the breaker, because breakers watch for overload and shorts, not for a bad connection quietly roasting itself inside a wall. Warm outlet, warm plug, any smell of hot plastic: unplug it, and get the circuit looked at.
An extension cord under the heater’s load. Most household extension cords are built for lamps, not for 12.5 continuous amps — under a heater’s draw they become heating elements themselves, usually coiled behind furniture on the carpet. The rule is absolute and has no cold-night exceptions: heaters plug directly into the wall. If the cord is the only way to reach the cold corner, the cold corner needs an outlet, not a cord.
A breaker that trips repeatedly and keeps getting reset. Resetting a breaker isn’t fixing anything — it’s re-arming the test and hoping for a different result. Once is information. Nightly is a diagnosis waiting for someone to accept it.
A loose-feeling plug, buzzing, or scorch marks at the outlet. Worn contacts arc under load, and arcing makes heat. An outlet that won’t grip a plug firmly has told you everything you need to know.
The permanent fixes, from modest to complete
The good news: every version of this problem has a real solution, and none of them is “buy a bigger heater.”
A dedicated circuit for the room that always needs one. If the same bedroom needs supplemental heat every winter, a dedicated 20-amp circuit is a modest, single-visit job that ends the tripping and removes the shared-circuit fire risk. This is one of the most common small jobs we do from November through March, and nobody has ever regretted it.
Fix the room instead of the symptom. A chronically cold room usually has a reason — and often a better answer than a portable heater droning all season. A properly sized electric baseboard or wall panel on its own circuit and thermostat is safer, quieter, and set-and-forget. Better still for many homes: a cold-climate mini-split heat pump, which delivers the same heat for a fraction of a plug-in heater’s operating cost — with NYS incentives currently helping on the equipment side.
Hear what the house is telling you. If ordinary modern life — a heater here, a microwave there — trips breakers in your house, the heaters are just the messengers. The underlying condition is an undersized service and tired circuits, and the cure is the panel and service conversation. Old houses around here have carried decades of added load on wiring sized for none of it; there’s no shame in it, but there is a fix.
The two-minute safety list (tape it near the heater)
Three feet of clearance from bedding, curtains, and anything that burns. On the floor — never a dresser, never a shelf. Plugged straight into the wall. Off when you leave the room, off when you sleep, unless the unit is specifically designed otherwise. A model new enough to have tip-over and overheat shutoffs — they’re cheap now.
And working, interconnected smoke detectors — because every honest fire-safety article ends at the same place, and this one’s no exception.
