It’s the most-Googled pricing question in residential electrical work: what does a 200-amp panel upgrade cost? And it deserves a better answer than the internet gives it.
The national-average articles ignore where you live. The lead-generation sites lowball to get your phone number. And the guy at the diner knows someone who did it for half of whatever you were quoted, though the details get vague under questioning.
We do service upgrades across Upstate New York constantly. Here’s the honest version — not a number pulled from the air, but the actual anatomy of the price, so that when quotes land on your kitchen table you can read them like someone who knows what’s in them.
Why “panel upgrade” is three different projects
The reason no honest electrician quotes this sight-unseen: the phrase panel upgrade describes three very different scopes, and your house — not your preference — decides which one you need.
Scope one: the panel swap. Your service entrance cable, meter equipment, and grounding are sound and already sized for 200 amps; only the panel itself — the box and breakers — changes. This is the most affordable case, commonly landing in the low thousands, and most straight swaps are re-energized the same day.
Scope two: panel plus service entrance. The cable coming from the weatherhead, or the meter socket, also needs replacing — undersized, deteriorated, or both. Very common on homes past a certain age, and it moves the number meaningfully, because now the utility gets involved and there’s outdoor infrastructure in the scope.
Scope three: the full service rebuild. New mast, new meter equipment, new entrance cable, new panel, new grounding electrode system — sometimes with utility-side coordination for the drop itself. What the walls are hiding. Fuse-era services were wired before grounding as we know it. Opening one up often surfaces adjacent work genuinely worth doing while everything’s accessible — and a good electrician will price it as options, not surprises.

Which utility you’re on. This surprises newcomers: Lake Placid and Tupper Lake run municipal electric departments, Plattsburgh has its own, and NYSEG and National Grid cover much of the territory between. What should be included (check quotes against this list)
A real 200-amp upgrade quote includes, in writing: a load calculation sized to your plans (the EV charger? the heat pump? the generator interlock?), permits, utility coordination handled end to end, the equipment itself, every circuit traced and labeled, torque-verified terminations, whole-home surge protection at least offered while the cover’s off, the inspection, and documentation your insurance carrier will accept without follow-up questions.

Is it worth upgrading before you’re forced to?
Usually, yes — and here’s the reframe that makes the decision easier: the panel upgrade is almost never the goal. It’s the prerequisite.
