Wiring a Detached Garage, Barn, or Workshop: Sub-Panels Done Right

April in the North Country is outbuilding season. The frost is leaving the ground, the new garage slab is getting scheduled, the barn is finally going to get more than the one bulb on the one switch, and somewhere out there a workshop that’s been running on a single heroic extension cord since the Clinton administration is about to be shown mercy.

Getting real power to a detached building is one of our favorite categories of work — it’s transformative, it’s permanent, and it’s one of the few electrical projects people get genuinely excited about. It’s also a project with three or four decisions that determine whether you do it once, or do it twice. Enough trenches have taught us which decisions those are. Here they are.

How big should the feeder to a detached garage be?

Here’s the economic fact that should drive the whole project: the cost of an underground feeder is mostly the trench and the labor — not the wire. The difference between pulling a 60-amp feeder and a 100-amp feeder through the same open trench is comparatively small money. The difference in what the building can do for the next forty years is enormous.

A 60-amp sub-panel runs lights, outlets, a modest heater — a garage that stores things. A 100-amp sub-panel runs the welder, the compressor, real heat or a mini-split, a car lift, and the EV charger that detached garages increasingly exist to host — a garage that does things.

So before anyone sizes anything, make the honest wish list. Not what you’ll install this summer — what the building might ever hold: welder (the actual spec-plate number, not a guess), compressor, heat, lift, dust collection, kiln, the electric truck you haven’t bought yet. That list — cross-checked against whether the main service can spare the load — sets the feeder. No one has ever complained that the feeder we pulled was too big. The other complaint, we’ve heard.

Trench or overhead in snow country?

Underground is the default answer here, and it’s not close: invisible, storm-proof, plow-proof, buried to code depth in conduit that shrugs off frost. The trench is the cost — and it’s also the opportunity, because an open trench is the cheapest real estate you’ll ever own. The same excavation can carry network cabling for the shop Wi-Fi and cameras, plus an empty spare conduit for whatever the future invents. Pipe is cheap; trenching twice is not. We spec spares almost automatically.

Overhead wins occasionally — long distances over ledge, terrain that fights excavation — and we’ll quote it honestly when it does. But every overhead span in our woods is a standing bet against snow load and tree limbs, and we’ve repaired enough lost bets to recommend it rarely.

A detached building’s electrical isn’t just “a panel, but smaller.” It carries its own code requirements, and they’re exactly the details that separate an insurable installation from handyman work:

  • Its own grounding electrode system — ground rods at the building, not just a wire back to the house
  • Proper separation of neutrals and grounds in the sub-panel — bonded at the main service only, isolated here; the single most common defect we find in DIY outbuilding panels
  • A proper disconnecting means at the building

Why belabor this? Because these details are invisible right up until an inspection, an insurance claim, or a fault makes them extremely visible — and because “just run some wire out to the garage” is a sentence that keeps turning into our repair work, at repair prices. Done right, it’s inspected, documented, and boring forever. Boring forever is the goal.

Barn wiring is its own discipline

Agricultural buildings are a category the code treats specially, for good reason: barns are damp, dusty, and chemically corrosive environments where standard hardware fails young. Proper barn electrical means dust- and damp-rated fixtures and devices, GFCI protection throughout, and wiring methods that tolerate the air a barn actually contains.

Then come the loads farm life stacks up — stock tank de-icers, water heaters, fans, heat tape, the compressor in the shop bay — usually accumulated one outlet at a time across decades. Barn electrical rewards being designed rather than accumulated, and April, before the season’s work ramps up, is the month to do it.

Finishing a shop like you mean it

The difference between “the building has power now” and “this is a great shop” is the last layer of decisions, and they’re cheap while we’re already there:

  • Outlets every few feet at bench height. The workshop truth no one has ever contradicted: you cannot have too many outlets. Waist-high, so cords don’t dangle across everything.
  • 240V drops where the machines will live — welder by the door, compressor in its corner — planned once, placed right.
  • Bright, even, honest LED lighting. High-output shop LEDs, laid out for zero shadows at the bench and the saw. Of everything on this page, this is the upgrade owners rave about most.
  • Exterior lighting on the path back to the house, because January exists.
  • Heat, or the rough-in for it — even a modest mini-split turns a three-season shop into a real one.

The site-plan-stage phone call

If the building is still on paper, this is the cheapest week of the whole project to involve us: feeder route, trench sharing with other site work, panel spec, and load math are nearly free decisions at the drawing stage and expensive ones after the slab is poured. Send us the plan — or if the building already exists and is still living the extension-cord life, send a photo of that instead. We’ve seen worse. Probably.
