Lake Placid does winter properly, and the village’s worth of holiday lighting every December proves it. Whole rooflines traced in C9s, trees wrapped trunk to tip, that one house on every road that clearly isn’t messing around.
This article is for the people behind those displays — specifically, everyone whose ambition has outgrown their outlets. You know the symptoms: the breaker that trips when the inflatables join the icicle lights. The GFCI that pops in every wet snow. The extension-cord daisy chain that’s become load-bearing infrastructure. The garage circuit that spends December moonlighting as reindeer support.
There are real fixes for all of it — and one of them is permanent. Let’s go through them before the ladder weather ends.
Why do Christmas lights trip the breaker?
Start with the math your display is quietly failing.
Old-style incandescent C9 bulbs — the big classic ones — draw about 7 watts per bulb. String 200 of them along a roofline and you’re at 1,400 watts, which is most of a 15-amp circuit before a single snowman inflates. And here’s the kicker: that exterior outlet you’re plugged into is almost never its own circuit. In most homes it shares with the garage, a bathroom, or half the kitchen — so your display isn’t just competing with itself, it’s competing with the microwave. The breaker isn’t being dramatic. It’s doing arithmetic.
Which is why the LED conversion is the single biggest upgrade available. LED holiday strings draw roughly one-tenth of their incandescent equivalents — the display that maxed out a circuit now sips it. They also run cool (kinder to greenery and shingles), survive being stepped on better, and last more seasons. If the budget only allows one improvement this year, convert the big C9 runs and watch the whole problem shrink by an order of magnitude.
Why does the outdoor GFCI keep tripping in the snow?
First, the non-negotiable: outdoor holiday power must run through GFCI protection — that’s code, and around melting snow it’s the protection that genuinely matters. So the answer is never to bypass it. (We’ve seen the workarounds. Please, no.)
But a GFCI that trips in every storm is telling you something specific: water is getting into your connections. The fix list, in order of effectiveness:
- In-use covers — the deep “bubble” covers that close over a plugged-in cord — on every outlet feeding the display. The flat flip-plate cover protects nothing once a cord is in it.
- Connections up off the ground. Every cord-to-string junction lying in the snowmelt path is a trip waiting for a thaw. Clip or tie junctions up, wrap them, keep them out of the drip lines.
- Outdoor-rated cords only, fully uncoiled. A coiled cord under sustained load builds heat inside the coil — an indoor cord doing outdoor heater duty is how holiday stories end badly.
- And if the GFCI trips with everything dry, tight, and elevated? The device itself may simply be worn out — outdoor GFCIs age fast in this climate, and replacement is quick, cheap work.
The permanent fix: outlets where the display actually lives
Now the upgrade that ends the whole annual struggle, and honestly one of our favorite small jobs to install: dedicated exterior circuits, with weatherproof outlets placed where your display actually goes.
Picture it: an outlet at the roofline soffit, right where the eave runs plug in — no more cord dangling down the siding. One at the porch. One at the base of the big spruce you wrap every year. All on their own circuits, sized for the load, GFCI-protected, with in-use covers. Then the finishing touch: a switch inside the house — or a smart control with a dusk schedule — so the entire display goes on and off from the kitchen, on time, every night, without anyone standing in the driveway in slippers.
The nightly extension-cord ritual, the door-gap cords, the garage circuit’s seasonal second job: all of it, gone permanently. It’s a modest, single-visit electrical job, it adds usable exterior outlets for the other eleven months (leaf blowers and string lights say thanks), and it pays its dividend every December forever. We schedule these throughout November — ideally before the snow makes ladder work miserable for everyone involved.
The quiet safety rules nobody follows until they do
A few habits worth adopting, offered without lecture:
Cords don’t go through window and door gaps. They get pinched, stripped, and forgotten — and a damaged cord bridging indoor power to outdoor water is exactly the failure mode all the other rules exist to prevent. If a cord must cross the building envelope, that’s the universe suggesting an exterior outlet.
Staples never touch cord insulation. Every year, somebody fastens a light run with a staple gun and pierces the jacket — turning a decoration into a fault. Use the plastic clips; they’re a dollar.
Timers carry the load rating. Lights that run while you sleep or travel deserve outdoor-rated timers or smart plugs actually rated for the wattage — not the indoor lamp timer from 1994 doing its bravest work in a snowbank.
