Here’s a question people half-expect an electrician to dodge: what electrical work am I actually allowed to do myself?
We’re going to answer it straight, for two reasons. First, because the North Country is DIY country — this region fixes its own trucks, plumbs its own camps, and doesn’t hire out what it can learn, and we respect that to our bones. Second, because we’ve seen exactly where homeowner electrical work goes right, where it goes wrong, and where the paperwork goes wrong even when the wiring went fine — and that last category is the one nobody warns you about.
So: the honest map. What’s genuinely yours, what’s legally murky, and what’s never worth it at any skill level.
The legal landscape: it’s local, and that surprises people
New York has no single statewide answer to “can a homeowner do their own electrical work” — licensing and permitting for electrical work are handled at the county, city, town, and village level, and the rules genuinely vary across our service area. Some municipalities allow owner-occupants to perform electrical work in their own single-family home with a permit and inspection; others effectively require licensed electricians for anything beyond trivial; rental and commercial properties are stricter everywhere; and the code being enforced (the NEC, via New York’s Uniform Code) is the same book we work from either way.
The practical takeaway: before any project bigger than a fixture swap, one call to your local code enforcement office answers what’s allowed at your address — Lake Placid, North Elba, Harrietstown, Jay, Plattsburgh, and the rest each have their own office and their own answer. The permit question isn’t bureaucratic hazing; it’s the thing standing between your project and the two traps below.
The two traps that catch finished projects
Trap one: the home sale. Unpermitted electrical work is invisible right up until a buyer’s inspector, attorney, or insurer asks for the paperwork — and then the finished basement, the garage sub-panel, or the “we added some circuits” answer becomes a closing condition, a renegotiation, or a demand to open walls and prove what’s in them. We get these panicked calls in every real-estate season. Retroactive legalization is possible (it’s a core part of our code-corrections work) but it’s always more expensive than the permit would have been.
Trap two: the insurance claim. Here’s the quiet one: after a fire or loss, carriers investigate cause — and unpermitted, uninspected electrical work in the origin area gives them exactly the exit they’re professionally trained to find. You don’t have to take our word for the stakes; ask your agent the hypothetical. The permit-and-inspection trail isn’t red tape. It’s your claim’s armor.
What’s genuinely reasonable homeowner territory
With permitting squared away, here’s where a careful, breaker-off, voltage-tester-owning homeowner operates reasonably — the like-for-like zone:
- Swapping fixtures, switches, and outlets like-for-like on healthy circuits (know your fan-rated box rule before hanging fans, and stop cold at aluminum branch wiring or cloth-era insulation — those change the rules)
- Replacing detectors, doorbells, thermostats, and other low-stakes device work
- Resetting and understanding breakers and GFCIs — testing them, knowing your panel’s labels, owning the main shutoff knowledge every adult in a house should have
- Cord-and-plug everything: lamps, equipment repairs on unplugged gear, and the cord-and-strip hygiene we wrote about in January
Do it with the breaker off and verified off — a non-contact voltage tester costs less than lunch — and this territory is honestly yours.
Where the line actually is
Our honest placement of the stop line, having repaired what’s beyond it:
Anything inside the panel. The panel is where the safety margins live and where the bus is live even with the main off. Panel work, breaker additions, and service equipment: licensed territory, permitted, inspected, no exceptions worth their savings.
New circuits and extensions. Not because pulling cable is arcane — because circuit design is where DIY actually fails: wire sizing, protection type (AFCI requirements surprise everyone), box fill, support, penetrations. The wiring usually works. Working and right are different words, and the difference surfaces years later, at inspections or worse.
Anything wet. Docks and boathouses, hot tubs, pools, exterior circuits. The code sections are strict because the failure modes are unforgiving; this is where we’re least flexible and least apologetic about it.
Old-wiring surgery. Knob-and-tube, aluminum, cloth insulation — these eras have rules of their own, and well-meaning modern splices onto old systems are among the most common hazards we’re hired to undo.
Generators and backfeed. One article, no exceptions, lives depend on it — line workers’ included.
