Extension Cords, Power Strips, and the Outlets Doing Too Much

Late January is peak cord season. Every heater, humidifier, heated blanket, and holiday-leftover gadget in the house is plugged in somewhere, and in older North Country homes — built when a bedroom got one outlet and liked it — “somewhere” means a beige archaeology of power strips, cube taps, and extension cords that nobody has audited since they accumulated.

Fire departments have a name for this season too, which is reason enough for this article. So: the honest guide to cords and strips — what they’re actually for, where the real dangers hide, and the permanent fix for the rooms that clearly need one.

What a power strip actually is (and isn’t)

Let’s clear up the hierarchy, because the marketing sure won’t:

A basic power strip is outlet multiplication, nothing more. It lets six things share one outlet’s capacity — it does not create capacity. Six phone chargers on a strip: fine, trivially. A heater and a microwave on a strip: the same overload you’d have without the strip, now funneled through a $9 plastic bar with a breaker of questionable ambition.

A surge-protector strip adds spike protection for the electronics plugged into it — genuinely useful as the second layer under whole-house protection, and worth buying instead of the basic strip for anything with a chip in it. It still doesn’t create capacity.

Neither is rated for heat-making appliances. Space heaters, toasters, microwaves, coffee makers, irons — anything whose job is heat draws serious continuous current, and every strip manufacturer’s fine print says the same thing nobody reads: not for use with high-wattage appliances. Heaters plug into walls. Full stop, again, forever.

The daisy chain and other winter classics

The failure patterns we actually find on service calls, ranked by frequency:

The daisy chain. A strip plugged into a strip plugged into an extension cord, reaching an outlet three furniture arrangements ago. Each connection point adds resistance; resistance under load makes heat; and the whole chain’s capacity is its weakest, cheapest link. Chains also make overloads invisible — five modest loads scattered across two strips feel organized while quietly summing past the circuit’s rating.

The permanent “temporary” cord. The extension cord that’s fed the freezer since 2019, run under the rug (heat trapped, insulation abraded — the rug-cord combination is a fire-statistics regular), stapled along the baseboard, or through a door that closes on it. Extension cords are rated and designed for temporary use. A cord with a permanent job is the house telling you, in its own language, exactly where it needs an outlet.

The undersized outdoor cord. The 16-gauge indoor cord running the engine-block heater or the heat tape through a snowbank. Outdoor loads want outdoor-rated, heavy-gauge (lower number = heavier) cords, fully uncoiled — a coiled cord under load is a space heater shaped like a spiral.

The two-prong adapter era. Cheater plugs breaking the ground on three-prong equipment, in houses old enough to have two-prong outlets — which is really a grounding and GFCI conversation wearing a 79-cent disguise.

Warm is the warning

One diagnostic rule covers this entire article: electrical hardware doing its job correctly stays cool. A warm plug, a warm cord, a warm strip, a warm outlet plate — any of them means resistance somewhere it shouldn’t be: an overloaded conductor, a worn connection, a failing device. Cool is normal. Warm is a warning. Hot is a now problem.

Make the rounds some January evening — hand on every strip and plug doing heavy winter duty. It takes five minutes and it’s the cheapest electrical inspection you’ll ever perform. Anything warm gets unplugged and gets a professional look, because the warm outlet’s cause is usually behind the wall plate, aging faster with every load cycle.

The real fix: outlets where your life actually is

Here’s the reframe that ends the cord era: every permanent cord and every loaded strip is a map — your household drawing you a diagram of exactly where the house needs capacity it doesn’t have.

The permanent answers, in ascending order of ambition: added outlets on existing circuits, fished cleanly through closed walls — the bedroom that has one outlet behind the bed can have four where furniture actually lives, usually in a single visit. Dedicated circuits for the heavy repeat offenders — the heater room, the freezer, the home office with its stack of equipment. And where the whole house runs cord-dependent because the service is out of headroom, the honest conversation is panel capacity — cords are frequently the visible symptom of a 100-amp house living a 200-amp life.

Old-house note, because this region is one big old house: outlet-poor rooms usually mean pre-modern wiring eras behind the plaster, so the outlet visit is also a chance to see what’s actually back there — and adding outlets on aging circuits sometimes graduates sensibly into the protection and rewiring conversation. The February challenge

Walk your house with a notepad. Every extension cord with a permanent job, every strip past three occupants, every warm plug: write down the room. That list — usually five lines or fewer — is a one-visit electrical project that retires a decade of workarounds, and January’s cord jungle is the best evidence you’ll ever gather for it.
